A Universal Human Problem.

Week 6: “Discrimination: How to fight it?”

A Universal Human Problem.

Discrimination in general will always be around, but the many forms of it are changing, as well as how it comes about. From outright violence to subtle misconceptions, people around the world face discrimination based on at least one part about their person; it could be their sex, age, disability or race. There is no denying that it is one of the major fundamental issues we face as humans, even in places we consider to lead the world in liberty and equality for all people.

Organisations are formed to target at least one group of people, using emotive language to put them in a ‘us or them’ situation. Sometimes it might not even be that overtly expressed; policies in governments could actually perpetuate discrimination based on one person’s view of them.

This is a universal human problem, a conundrum that is far higher beyond people as individuals and groups. Simply sweeping it under the carpet and pretending it doesn’t exist is not the way to address it, neither would self-fulfilling prophecies about people behaving the way they’re expected to.

To fully combat to discrimination we would have to look at the wider picture. Is this part of the culture? Was it because of past experiences? One has a lot of questions to ask in this regard, as there might not be a one solution for all problems we face today.
