Europe Arena 2: “Linguistic Babel: 52 Nations with 48 Different Languages, Is It a Point of Strength or a Weakness for Europe?”
Diversity as a Strength.
The European Union, the biggest union in the world. Twenty-Eight
different nations, Germanic, Celtic, Slavic and many others are connected in
one complex. It sounds as a weakness, but is it really a weakness?
I do not see it as a significant weakness, because in
most of cases international oriented companies have qualified employees. They
speak English as a fundamental communicative language and the other necessary
language depends where the company has its place of business.
For prevalent EU citizens it is not a great problem
too. However, when you want to visit any foreign country and you don’t know its
language, then it does not matter if you travel outside the Union or to any
member state.
On top of that, nation means to have own traditions,
habits and in many cases own language. Nations can be similar, but not exactly
the same… if the EU was a union of one nation & language not a
community of diverse nations & languages, it would lose the magic of international communication, respect and
understanding. It would be like one enormous state.
Diversity is what unites us.
This is the strength.
