Week 2: “We have no more time. What we can do to save the Earth when politics doesn't react?”
The Ambiguity Barrier.
How can we save the planet?
What should we do? Well, that’s the thing… I have no idea. I’m not sure if
anyone really and truly knows what we should do. In fact, I’m pretty sure they
don’t. That’s the problem though. Nobody really knows what to do. So, we turn
to our leaders, our politicians. We tell them to do something to save the
planet. But why are they so special? Because they’re in positions of power?
Well, so what if they are? If they don’t know what to do, or they just don’t
want to do anything, then their position isn’t going to be of any help for the
cause.
I guess it’s true that we do have
some ideas about what to do to save the planet. The problem is, we don’t know
if they will work or not. What if it’s too late? What if anything we do right
now to try to save the planet won’t be beneficial at all because we’ve already
gone too far? What if we’re just overreacting and everything’s going to be fine
whether we do anything or not? It’s “what ifs” like these that are the reason
why nothing gets done because, whether people like it or not, those questions
actually have some merit. The way I see it though is, what if it’s not too
late? Do we really want to sit around and not try to do anything if there
actually is some chance of making a difference?
Then there’s the apathetic
ones. The people that just don’t care. If there is a problem, whatever. If
there’s not a problem, whatever. They don’t care. Then there’s people who do
nothing because they don’t think that their actions can make a difference. What
can I do? I’m just one person in 8 billion. The actions of one person out of 8
billion others isn’t going to make a difference. And, unfortunately, that’s
true. The thing is, if we ever want anything to get done in regards to saving the planet, we’re going to have to do it as a united front because the actions of one single person really aren’t going to make a difference. If the politicians don’t know what to do, someone else has to take the lead somehow. If the politicians don’t want to do anything, then we have to stand up and tell them that we want them to do something. We have to band together and come up with ways to help the planet. But how do we do that? I have no idea. I can say this stuff all day long, but in the end, I’m just guessing. I really have no idea how to help the planet. I really don’t. I recycle and try not to waste water. That’s about it, and I don’t even know if that really helps. So, yeah, I’m clueless. We need to do something because what could it hurt to try? But I don’t know what to do. I don’t know what should be done. I just think that whatever we do, the whole planet will have to do it united because otherwise it probably just won’t be enough.
